The Rhinebeck Chamber Music Society new series opens Saturday, October 6, at 8 pm, at the Church of the Messiah, Montgomery St., Rte 9, in Rhinebeck, with the award-winning Imani Winds in a diverse program of music ranging from Piazzola and Paquito D\\\'Rivera to Terra Incognita and Valerie Coleman, Imani flutist and noted composer. The five accomplished musicians, Valerie Coleman, flutes, Toyin Spellman-Diaz, oboe, Mariam Adam, clarinet, Jeff Scott, French Horn, and Monica Ellis, bassoon joined forces in 1997 to expand the boundaries of the traditional wind quintet and explore the links between European, African and American music. The name Imani, which literally means \\\"faith\\\" in Swahili, embodies this mission. In their time together, this young ensemble of African/Latin American heritage has established a distinct presence in the classical world for dynamic playing, and innovative programming. Additionally, the award-winning Imani demonstrated its commitment to exploring new forms by creating and presenting a multi-disciplinary tribute to Josephine Baker, including dance and song, on the 100th anniversary of her birth titled \\\"Josephine Baker: A Life of Le Jazz Hot\\\" in collaboration with chanteuse Rene Marie and others, which was premiered to great acclaim in Pittsburgh in 2006.
