BARKHAMSTED — The Winsted Lions Club held its 50th anniversary remembrance party at the Log House Restaurant Wednesday, Dec. 15.
Members and past presidents attended the party, which doubled as a Christmas celebration.
The club was organized on March, 16, 1960, and currently has 23 members, including president Blanche Sewell.
“We are, at heart, a service organization,” Sewell said. “Our motto is ‘We serve,’ and we do. We serve our community in many different ways.”
Since the club’s founding in 1960, members have conducted blood drives, collected and distributed food to the Open Door Kitchen and the Salvation Army and collected and purchased eyeglasses for both children and adults in need.
They also sponsor The Leo Club at The Gilbert School, which encourages teenagers to do volunteer work in their community.
The local club is a part of the national Lions Club International, which was founded in 1917 and has 1.35 million members in 206 countries and geographic areas.
“We always do so much to reach out to the community to find out what their needs are,” Sewell said. “We always welcome new members.”
