CORNWALL — On Saturday mornings, from spring to fall, look for the best of Cornwall on The Wish House lawn in the center of West Cornwall.
The Cornwall Farm Market has become so much more than just a place to sell food. Its fifth year begins May 14 with early produce and cut flowers, as well as eggs, meat, baked goods, botanicals, massages, knife sharpening services and more. The market’s hours will be 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
“Our vendors are totally dedicated to bringing the best and freshest locally made and grown products to the market. People come and plan their weekend meals around what they find at the farm market,” said Bronwyn O’Shaughnessy, who has taken over organizing the weekly market from originator Biancha Griggs.
It has grown steadily since Griggs invited local farmers and artisans to ply their wares on the shady lawn of her gift shop. Her goal was to liven up the village’s sleepy commercial district. The market has since become a social mecca, a place to shop as well as a place to catch informal performances by local talent, along with demonstrations that have included yoga and tai chi.
A committee is working to fine-tune the already winning formula. There is a website — cornwallfarmarket.org (one “m”) — that links to a blog, and Twitter and Facebook pages.
For those who want to plan ahead, the plan is for producers to post what’s in season and what they will bring to the market on any given week.
“We plan to post recipes and suggestions,” O’Shaughnessy said. “Growers and other vendors are great about giving people advice about what to serve, for example what snap peas go well with, or how to prepare produce that people might not have tried before.”
A couple of larger-scale entertainment events are in the works for this summer.
Vendors will eventually be able to sign up to reserve space. At this point, there is so much interest a waiting list has been established. For more information and to register send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
