FALLS VILLAGE — Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Connecticut will hold its annual wine tasting and auction Saturday, July 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the home of Habitat supporters Lynn and Tony Nania (35 Undermountain Road, just off Route 7).
Dubbed “Summer Sips & Savories,” the event will feature wines selected by Fred Tregaskis, a wine expert and owner of New England Wine Cellars in West Cornwall. The wines have been donated by Little Gates & Company of Millerton and the Salisbury Package Store. Other donors, including local restaurants and markets, will provide hors d’oeuvres (the savories).
Radio personality and political science professor Alan Chartock will be the auctioneer. Since 1981, Chartock has been president and chief executive officer of WAMC-Northeast Public Radio, a National Public Radio affiliate based in Albany. He is also professor emeritus of political science and communications at the State University of New York at Albany.
Music will be provided by the Louise Baranger Trio. Baranger is a trumpeter who has played at the Litchfield Jazz Festival and with such notables as Harry James, Nelson Riddle, Joe Cocker and Holly Near.
“We’re excited,” said Erin Selby, a Habitat board member and co-chair of the event. “It will be a fun evening.”
Live auction items include some impressive vacation trips such as a week at a Tuscany villa, a vacation at a private home in County Cork, Ireland, a timeshare anywhere in the world and a beachfront home in Cayman Brac. The silent auction includes wine, gift certificates, services, art work and items from local merchants.
All proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Connecticut, which is currently building its seventh affordable home in the area, located in Falls Village on Lime Rock Station Road. Dinnee and Leslee Light will purchase the home and live there with their three children. Habitat is still looking for additional volunteers to help build the home; contact local chapter president John Pogue at 860-435-4747 or e-mail jpogue@snet.net.
Selby said Habitat wanted to acknowledge its major corporate sponsors for the event, including: New England Wine Cellars; Salisbury Bank and Webster Bank (gold medal sponsors); Becton-Dickinson; Best & Cavallaro Real Estate; C.A. Lindell & Son; Ed Herrington, Inc.; Elyse Harney Real Estate; The Hotchkiss School; John Harney Associates; Litchfield Bancorp and Robinson Leech Real Estate (silver medal sponsors).
Tickets are $25 and are available at the door. They can also be reserved by calling Susan Gallaway at 860-435-9345 or e-mailing sjgallaway@aol.com.
