A fundraiser steeped in history

MILLERTON — The weather was looking a little glum early Sunday morning, June 28, but come 2 p.m. the clouds disappeared, just in time for the North East Historical Society’s High Tempo Tea Party to enjoy some great summer weather.

It was the second year the “nontraditional” tea party has been held, according to society President Ralph Fedele. This year, Simmons’ Way Village Inn on Main Street hosted the event.

The $25 admission fee offered a lot for attendees in return. There was live music provided by pianist/composer Michael Brown, classical guitarist Jonathan Fritz and barber shop singers The Housatonics, tea tasting provided by Harney & Sons Fine Teas and delicious tastes coming from Martha’s (the inn’s restaurant) and executive chef Michael Myers.

There was also a silent auction in the barn, with dozens of items donated from local businesses. And near the sidewalk there was an historical society booth set up, where calendars, books, T-shirts and a variety of memorabilia were available for purchase.

The tea party raised more than $10,000 last year, according to Fedele, which went toward purchasing archival equipment for the historical society. The board has yet to decide what the funds will be used for this year.

“We thought it was the right historic building for the historical society to use,” said Martha Reynolds, one of the owners of Simmons’ Way. “We were happy that they asked us, and it turned out to be a wonderful idea. Everyone’s having a great time.”
