HARLEM VALLEY — Tilly Strauss has been selected as the artistic representative for the towns of North East and Amenia as well as the village of Millerton, all of which will be participating in Walking on Air, a community artists project and collaboration celebrating the opening of the Walkway Over the Hudson.

The walkway is an old railroad bridge in Poughkeepsie being transformed into the highest pedestrian walkway in the country. Its opening on Oct. 3 will coincide with the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial celebration.

Strauss attended the most recent Amenia Town Board meeting, to both thank the town for picking her and to ask for its assistance in this project. Strauss is responsible for designing the main emblematic flag for each of the municipalities, as well as 25 processional flags, which will be used during the opening ceremony as each of the 50 towns in Ulster and Dutchess counties make their way across the bridge.

Amenia town Supervisor Wayne
Euvrard said he has arranged for a school bus to transport people interested in representing Amenia during the ceremony. Rudy Eschbach has volunteered to drive the bus. Euvrard said he is hoping to get between 40 and 50 people to attend.

Millerton Mayor John Scutieri said he has known Strauss for many years, and is excited that she was nominated and accepted for the position.

“She’s absolutely a brilliant artist,” he said.

“I’m very proud to be picked,” Strauss said.

The village is currently working with the North East Historical Society, as well as local committees, to begin the process of selecting and approving designs for the Millerton flag.

Strauss will be holding several workshops to harvest local talent and bring together community members who are interested in working with town colors and designs to put on the flags, which have to be completed by mid-September.

“We need to get everybody involved,” Strauss said. “I have all the materials, and my studio is right in town. We need people to come in and come up with designs.”

Three workshops have been officially scheduled, with the first being on Sunday, July 12 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Indian Rock Schoolhouse, located on Mygatt Road in Amenia. The next two will be held on July 22 and 23 at Strauss’ studio on Route 22 in Amenia, between the M&T Bank and the United Presbyterian Church.

Anyone unable to make those dates or just interested in bouncing ideas off the artist may contact her by telephone at 845-373-7813 or by e-mail at tillystudio@aol.com.
