WEBUTUCK — The Liverpool Central School District Board of Education, located outside of Syracuse, voted Monday night, June 29, to accept Richard Johns as its new superintendent of schools.

Johns has been the superintendent for the Webutuck Central School District since July 1, 2004. His contract with Liverpool had not been finalized as of June 30, and his pay is unknown. Johns was receiving $141,702 per year at Webutuck.

The Webutuck Board of Education held an executive session Monday night as well to begin planning for the future of the school district and to start the search to replace Johns. While Johns hadn’t turned in his letter of resignation as of Tuesday morning, Board of Education President Dale Culver said that he has been in communication with Johns and knew about the possible job in Liverpool.

“We’ve had fair warning and we’ve been using that time wisely,” Culver said. The district is going to utilize Michael O’Neil, a former elementary school principal, as a liaison and as an assistant in helping the district find a new superintendent.

“We laid out a road map of issues that we have and things we need to deal with,” Culver added. “We appreciate all of [Johns’] efforts in the past dealing with issues, and there is a lot of his work that will stay in place and continue to grow.

“We have a well-versed person in Mike O’Neil, a veteran board to assist us, and we are going to work diligently to move this school and community a step ahead.”

Johns was unable to be reached in time for this article. He is the third major figure at Webutuck to leave the district in the past few months. High school principal Jay Posephney resigned in March; Athletic Director Mike Riddle’s contract was terminated at the beginning of June.
