LAKEVILLE — Judi Moore was getting a head start last Friday on unpacking items for the massive Habitat for Humanity tag sale — the first weekend in August — at the Mars Athletic Center on The Hotchkiss School campus.
“We started Wednesday,” she said.
Habitat board members had started bringing large, full vans of goods that day; then, on Friday morning, Habitat volunteer John Pogue showed up with a full U-Haul truck — and a cadre of helpers from a youth service program in North Canaan.
“We unpack for the first week,” said Moore as she wheeled a cart around. “And we do pricing the second week.”
Moore has a regimen for pricing. “I absolutely hate it when I go to a tag sale and something’s not priced.”
So after everything on one of the long tables has a price tag on it, the table is marked off with surveyor’s tape.
“Crime scene tape, we call it,” Moore said. “And woe to anyone who puts something on that table.”
This is the 19th year of the fundraising tag sale, and the seventh year at Hotchkiss. The sale has outgrown both the basement at St. Mary’s in Lakeville and the Bitterman Center at St. Joseph’s in North Canaan.
Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Connecticut promotes home ownership by building houses in partnership with residents in need of adequate housing. It is a volunteer organization and is currently building its eighth house.
