Dinner for Dale
NEW HARTFORD — Two months after the tragic death of 16-year-old Jerry Dale Cox, friends and family came together at a benefit dinner in his memory Saturday, Feb. 19, at Brodie Park.
Cox, a Winsted resident, died in December in a one-car accident while travelling on Route 8 in Torrington.
He was a junior at Oliver Wolcott Technical High School. He was restoring a 1967 Ford Mustang but had not completed the work at the time of his death.
The event was a benefit to raise funds to finish restoring the car Cox was working on.
According to event organizer Lindsey Prevuznak, who is a family friend, more than 300 people attended the dinner, which raised approximately $3,000.
“Dale was probably one of the smartest kids I’ve ever met,” Prevuznak said. “He was a very loving, caring and generous guy. Sometimes when I saw him he was a very quiet guy. You almost needed to warm him up a little before he came out of his shell, then you saw the funny side of him.”
Many of Cox’s friends and family shared memories of him at the dinner, including his younger brother, Mike Cox.
“He was always there for me when I needed him,” Mike said. “He was fun to hang around with and he was a funny guy.”
Alex Mueller called his late cousin “the greatest.”
“He was there anytime you needed him,” Alex said. “If something ever went down, he always had your back.”
Cox’s girlfriend, Nikki DuBois, remembered him as someone who was outgoing and always really happy.
“Whenever anyone needed him he would help you out,” Nikki said. “He loved his truck and put everything he had into it. He was a family guy who always put his family first.”
Nikki’s father, Joe, said Cox was a very polite young man.
“He called me ‘Pops’, I’d call him ‘Junior,’” Joe DuBois said. “He was a good worker and a pleasure to be around. I only wish I had some more time to know him.”
According to Prevuznak, donations to fix the 1967 Ford Mustang that Cox was working on will continue to be accepted and can be made at TD Bank in Winsted at 200 New Hartford Road.
